What’s in your mouth?

Did you ever think of your mouth as a receptacle of sorts, when it comes to eating and drinking; in goes the coffee each morning as well as regular food. But it’s also where bacteria, viruses, and fungi like to hang out. After all, it’s moist, dark, and warm—a perfect environment where germs thrive.

Did you know over 700 species of bacteria have been detected in the mouth according to scientific findings published in the Journal of Clinical Microbiology 1

That’s why it’s important to make oral health a top priority. So we did a little research and found some interesting facts about your teeth—and some tips to help you manage what’s in your mouth. As always, this information should not replace medical advice from your personal doctor or dentist.

  1. Eating foods with too much acid (like tomatoes and citrus fruits) may erode tooth enamel over time. Water can help to keep acidity levels in check. 2
  2. Calcium-rich foods like cheese, non-fat yogurt and milk help replenish necessary minerals that keep teeth strong and healthy. 2
  3. Brushing and flossing daily can help prevent gum disease because it removes bacteria and plaque on the teeth—both can contribute to the disease. 3, 4
  4. When plaque hardens it becomes tartar. Once it travels under the gums, it’s difficult to remove unless you visit a dental professional regularly. 5

NOT-SO-FUN FACT—About 70% of adults over 65 years of age are diagnosed with periodontal or gum disease. Men have a higher incidence of periodontal disease, at 56%, compared to women, at 38%. 6

Periodontal disease is generally caused by inflammation and infection in the gums and surrounding bone that supports the tooth. 6
